Cover letter opening lines that don't waste the first sentence

The first line decides whether the rest gets read. Make it about them, or about a real result.

Skip the announcement

'I am writing to apply for the X role' tells the reader what they already know. The slot is too valuable to spend on a label.

Open with their problem

Name something specific about the company or role you're excited to work on. It signals research and intent in one line.

Or open with proof

Lead with a concrete result — 'I cut a product's onboarding time in half; I'd love to do that for X.' A number earns attention fast.

Match the tone

A scrappy startup and a bank read differently. Meet the company where it is without losing your own voice.
