How to explain an employment gap without apologising
Gaps are normal and rarely the dealbreaker people fear. Name it plainly, then move on.
Gaps are common now
Layoffs, caregiving, health, study and sabbaticals are ordinary. Recruiters see gaps constantly; what they dislike is a gap you seem to be hiding.
State it in one line
A short, factual entry — 'Career break, 2024: full-time caregiving' or 'Sabbatical, 2023: travel and self-study' — closes the question before it's asked.
Show you stayed sharp
Any course, freelance project, or volunteering during the gap becomes a line that keeps the timeline warm and your skills current.
Don't over-explain
One line is enough. Paragraphs of justification draw more attention to the gap than the gap itself ever would.
