Chronological, functional, or hybrid: pick the right format

Reverse-chronological wins by default. Functional raises a flag. Hybrid is the honest middle for pivots.

Reverse-chronological

Roles newest-first is what recruiters expect and trust. It answers the two questions they ask fastest: what are you doing now, and how did you get here.

Why functional feels evasive

A skills-first, dates-hidden layout is read as 'what are they covering up?'. Even with a clean history, it fights the reader's instincts.

Hybrid for career changers

Lead with a short summary and a skills section that reframes your transferable strengths, then keep a dated, reverse-chronological history below. You get the framing without hiding the timeline.

Keep the dates visible

Whatever you choose, show the dates. Hidden dates cost more trust than any gap they conceal.
